“when the world is running down

you make the best of what’s still around”

sting, the police

i had raisin toast for breakfast and apparently i dropped a squashed raisin and it stuck to my sole.

when i stood up in the bathroom, i saw it just peeking out. i asked the caregiver to get it, saying “isn’t that a line from bad, bad leroy brown-he got a 32 gun in his pocket for fun, he got a raisin in his shoe?”

this is a silly example of the creativity that has sparked lately.

i don’t know why, but creativity has changed and maybe even increased. i used to play the ukulele for my own enjoyment, teaching myself songs and writing arrangements and/or lyrics that modernize, or parody, or otherwise entertain. i was a member of a player’s group, and intended to organize to do a “ukulele flash mob” in grand central station.

‘i was also intending to sing/play at a local coffeeshop when this happened. tom leherer and weird al yankovic are my patron saints.

recently, i had an idea for a kick-ass two woman play, a imaginary meeting of josephine baker and marian anderson in 1930s paris about artistry, racism, and the state of the u.s. i wrote to two well-known playwrights because i know i lack the chops to write it myself, but i got no response.

i wrote a comedy song that asks “are you a mullet or a beard?” when it comes to hanging toilet paper on the holder.

i used to write and draw cartoons, which, as you may or may not know, require a skewed way of looking at things and the drawing skills to pull it off. recently i had two ideas, and drew one that i had been mulling over for quite some time. just this week i had two more. then another one yesterday. remember the farside by gary larson? the ideas i have been having lately look at the plant kingdom as he looked at animals. i even have a name for the strip- natural selection.

why so much activity? is it the “hell with everything” attitude i now have, or something else? i’m cautious analyzing it for fear it will stop.

next time: milestones.
